Common side effects
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): This is the main risk. Symptoms can include fever, chills, lower abdominal pain, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and an increased need to urinate. Bladder Spasms: These feel like painful cramps or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvis, caused by irritation to the bladder wall. Pain and Discomfort: This can occur during insertion, while the catheter is in place, and briefly after removal. Pain or a burning sensation during urination typically resolves within 24-72 hours after removal. Urine Leakage: Urine may leak around the outside of the catheter, often due to bladder spasms or a blockage in the tube.
